What to do in a Chemical Emergency

I. Steps for Sheltering in Place

1. Go Inside/Stay Calm

If your eyes, nose or throat become irritated, protect by covering your mouth and nose with several layers of damp cloth and take frequent shallow breaths.

2. Turn Off the AC or Heater

    Close Windows and Doors.

    Do not use the fireplace.

    Close the fireplace damper

Taping cracks or openings will provide more protection.

3. Tune in to Your Local Emergency Radio or Television Station

4. Use the Telephone for Emergencies Only.

II. Steps for Evacuation

Evacuate ONLY if instructed to Do So by Authorities.

    • Stay Calm.

    • Gather the Essentials.

(Medicine, Baby Supplies, Drivers License, Checkbook)

    • Don’t Forget About Pets.

    • Keep Windows and Air Vents in Your Car Closed.

    • Follow Designated Routes.

(Law enforcement officers along the route will direct you.)

REMEMBER...If You Have Children in School

DO NOT go to the school to pick up your child(ren) unless told to do so by school officials. If you go to the school, you are putting yourself and the children in danger when doors are opened to allow you to remove your children from their safe shelter.

DO NOT try to call your child’s school.

If there is an emergency, phone lines will be needed for official business.

Students will be taken into schools and cared for or evacuated by bus to a safe haven.

What is the Community Notification System ?

CNS provides up to date information in the event of a chemical emergency by way of a telephone call to nearby residents. This phone ring down system is provided by First Call Interactive. It calls all “listed” phone numbers with a message concerning the emergency and what steps you need to take. Our CNS covers our LEPC area (from Galena Park, Jacinto City, North Channel, Sheldon, Channelview, Barrett Station, Highlands, Crosby, and Huffman).
